The Securities Exchange Commission of Zambia and the Capital Markets Association of Zambia in partnership with UNZABECA ran an essay writing competition under the theme “A smart investor”. This was to commemorate the world investor week in October 2019.
Following an extensive and overwhelming response that was received from the students the announcement was only done in February 2020 after the university had been re-opened.
The guest of honour was the Chief Executive Officer for the Securities Exchange Commission Mr. Philip Chitalu. In his speech he echoed the need for smart investors to always verify that the investment professionals they are dealing with is licensed; conduct research on any product they wish to buy and carefully assess the impact of fees when choosing an investment. He further, spoke to the fact that all smart investors should take time to understand the key risks in all investments that they undertake and recognize the power of compounding interest.
Speaking during the same function the President of CMAZ Mr. Nicholas Kabaso also urged the students to start their investment plans early. He urged the students to take advantage of the opportunity they had of interacting with the capital market players in order to make quality decision about their investments.
During the prize giving ceremony a total of 40 different students were recognized for having submitted their essay towards the competition. Yet, a fourth year Economics major student Ms. Mukubi Shateka was awarded with the grand prize.
Mr. Kabaso encourgaed all students to remain determined as they were all winners in the essay competition.
